We came across the idea of selling cars like this when we were operating off the Melbourne High Street. All of us were in the same neighbourhood, were targeting the same population base and had similar expense profiles. A fellow who wandered up and down the road asking everybody “please help me sell my car” would receive offers in a tight price band. We were going nowhere slowly like a couple of cowboys herding cattle across the Texas plains.
When I woke the next morning I had a new used car sales strategy singing in my head. From that moment on we were going to be known as “The Car Buyers” and our slogan was going to be “we buy cars everywhere in Australia and we pay the top cash prices possible”. But Kane,” my wife asked me “who are you going to sell the cars to?”
“No worries sweetheart. I’m going to create networks like you never saw”. As our used cars sales volumes began rocketing up believe me I had no shortage of takers hungry for the opportunities this offered. I issued a quick press release entitled “We Buy Any Car Australia is Selling as Long as It’s a Decent Runner” that had the telephone company complaining I was locking up their fancy electronic switchboard.
If I was going to stand a chance of responding to even half the letters starting with “help me sell my car please Kane” I needed a website and I needed one really fast. What you see now is several evolutions further on, although it still has the three buttons car valuation, trade-in valuation and insurance valuation running like a ribbon across the middle of the home page.
In the beginning several used car auction chains tried to fight back. “We Buy Cars” and “We Sell Cars” were emblazoned across their storefronts. Problem they had is that premises and auctioneers cost a tidy sum of money and they couldn’t compete with my business model.
So five years later when I advertise “I want to buy a used car (any area)” I get deluged with invitations from places as far apart as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Darwin, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Townsville, Mackay, Cairns, Wagga Wagga, Albury, Wodonga, Echuca, Mildura, Horsham, Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong. I’m so far ahead now that nobody can catch me now. But I’m still running off those tiny margins.
